Members of Cleveland City Council’s Transportation and Mobility Committee convene on Wednesday, October 7, to hear from local experts and leaders from the business, healthcare and flight training community to discuss the ongoing debate surrounding Burke Lakefront Airport.
These BKL advocates – some of whom are coalition members in the Lakefront Airport Preservation Partnership – are presenting arguments emphasizing the facility’s economic value to the city and region. They will share with municipal leaders that the infrastructure serves as a crucial gateway for business aviation, tourism, and flight instruction, serving general aviation in a manner comparable to an important highway exit. Additionally, supporters will underscore the facility’s role as a vital community asset that provides essential infrastructure for life-saving Medevac operations, emergency medical transport, and organ transport services, while functioning as a critical reliever airport for Cleveland Hopkins.
Beyond immediate operational benefits, advocates urge municipal leaders to grant long-term lease agreements, which would incentivize private stakeholders to invest heavily in facility modernization and workforce training. Supporters also point to opposition against closing the facility from federal and state officials, including leaders within the FAA.
BKL advocates emphasize that the airfield remains a vital community asset whose sustained operation drives regional economic growth and generates skilled jobs more effectively than speculative land development. Council leadership have emphasized that this hearing is informational and that no formal determination regarding the site’s closure is up for consideration at the meeting.
